The following 10 trees from previous Seminars have been written with information gathered from personal observations of the author, living in Massachusetts, Zone 6, and information provided by J. Frank Schmidt & Son.
Bessoniana Black Locust
This small, compact, well branched oval form is unlike what is expected of Black Locust. Well-behaved growth and spineless character make ‘Bessoniana’ Black Locust more compatible with people and urban settings.

Frans Fontaine Hornbeam
‘Frans Fontaine’ Hornbeam is tough, adaptable, a good urban tree, and good for screening and narrow sites.

average appearance in New England, preferred over species. Fastigiate form is maintained with maturity,
the narrowest of the C. betulus cultivars.

Korean Sun Flowering Pear
Excellent fall color and compact size are key attributes of this selection. Although definitely a dwarf, this cultivar grows faster with better nursery characteristics than the parent species.

White fir is one of the few evergreens that will tolerate urban pollution, heat, and drought.

conditions, does not like clay or constantly wet soil

Planting: Transplants easily B&B, shallow spreading roots
Pruning: Prune at planting and 3 years later to mature form

Design Uses: Excellent specimen, good substitute for spruce
Companions: Use with ground covers such as Sedum, Vinca, and Pachysandra, however
dense shade of lower branches can kill turf grass
