The following 10 trees from previous Seminars have been written with information gathered from personal observations of the author, living in Massachusetts, Zone 6, and information provided by J. Frank Schmidt & Son.
Greencolumn Black Maple
Greencolumn Maple is an upright oval tree with good resistance to heat. This selection of Black Maple is better adapted to hot dry conditions than sugar maples. Its autumn leaves are yellow and orange, instead of red. The original tree was selected by Bill Heard from a native stand in central Iowa.

Culture: Tolerates heat, drought, most soils, and urban pollution
Hardiness Zone: 3 – 8
Growth Rate: Slow, average 4” per year
Pest Resistance: Excellent except for some leaf scorch problems
Storm Resistance: Excellent, good strong wood, good crotch strength
Salt Resistance: Excellent, better than sugar maple
Planting: Transplants easily B&B, avoid bare root for this cultivar

Aurora Dogwood
Heavy blooming with broad, creamy white, overlapping flower bracts, Aurora dogwood is one of the showiest of the Rutgers' Stellar dogwoods. Aurora is vigorous, upright growing and becomes rounded with age.

Design Uses: Good street tree for under wires, excellent for residential landscapes
Companions: Excellent in groves with Nyssa, Ostrya, Oxydendrum, and Hydrangea
Other Comments: Very popular, an excellent substitute to C. florida, heavy flowering with firm, well-formed flower bracts that stand up to wind and heat, one of the most impressive and disease resistant cultivars

Willow Oak
Willow Oak is a fast growing oak with unique, slender, “willow like” leaves. This is a popular and commonly planted shade tree. Widely used as a street and boulevard tree, as well as a shade tree for parks, golf courses, commercial sites, and open spaces. Due to its fibrous root system, Willow Oak is fast growing and one of the easier oaks to transplant.

Norwegian Sunset Maple
Norwegian Sunset Maple has an upright oval form with yellow orange to red fall color. Norwegian
Sunset has a particularly nice branch structure and uniform canopy. Its Acer truncatum parentage provides glossy foliage and heat resistance.

When you have finished answering all questions you will be prompted to click ‘next’ to send your answers to gibneyCE.com. You can then click ‘next’ to view your test summary. A test review of your answers is available upon request.
All passing test scores are sent from gibneyCE.com to your organization(s) at the end of every month and they will appear on your certification record 4 to 6 weeks* after that. ISA maintains a record of CEU credits on their website *SAF requires 5 passing test scores before reporting.
Test re-takes are allowed, however you will have to pay for the retake if you are using the pay per test option. You can spend as much time as you would like to take the test but it is important not to leave the test site until you have answered all the questions and see the 'sending your answers' response.
